Trying My Hand At Blogging... About Something I Love

While writing isn't new to me, the idea of putting thoughts out there for everyone to see certainly is. I'm giving this a go mostly as a learning tool.

The Boy Scouts certainly have a reputation in America. Some of it is good. Some not so good. When my son was a baby I had decided that there was no way my boy would join an organization that was not accepting of everyone. But, God has a sense of humor and when Rowan was in first grade and attended the parish Join Scouting Night his eyes lit up. For the first time that year I think he felt like he had found something where he could be himself. He gleefully joined the other 20 or so boys running around being....well...boys. While his scouting career has been a little rocky - he's still in it. And by his second year, I was hooked. First, I became the Den Leader. Now I'm pretty strongly entrenched in it. Last January, I became the Cubmaster of the Pack. Rowan has bridged to a Boy Scout Troop, attending Summer Camp (a huge accomplishment for him) and working towards his Tenderfood rank. I guess I decided that sometimes the way to enact change is to become involved. That's ultimately what I hope to help happen.

As for me, I will write about my experiences as a Cubmaster, a Unit Commissioner, a member of Wood Badge staff - something I enjoy immensly, and as the mother of both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout. Of course other aspects of my life will have to creep in as well.

An added bonus of Scouting was a joy for camping that I didn't know I have. While I'm still pretty much of a novice and my family thinks I'm a little nuts, I just LOVE it. Some of it is all about the gear (and there's some pretty cool gear out there). But the first time I was lying in a tent and heard an owl hooting was memorable.

Thanks for taking a peek. My Blog title comes from the Scouting Oath - On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
